Fuerteventura Fuerteventura is on the same latitude as Florida and Cairo. It lies 60 miles off the African coast and has a barren, desert type landscape. Cloudy days are common in winter, but rainfall is extremely low and will be short, sharp showers rather than prolonged periods. The island is situated in the northeast trade winds and there is a fairly strong NE wind blowing for much of the time. This is stronger in summer than in winter. The wind tends to be stronger in the northeast of the island than anywhere else. On the beaches you will see low walls of black volcanic rock which have been built up as windbreaks, which are very effective. It is possible to get occasional days of flat calm when the temperature gets really high. Year round sunbathing is possible with temperatures in the high teens/ low twenties centigrade in winter (as I write its 20 degrees at 5.30 in the evening) and rarely more than around 28 degrees in summer, due to the cooling wind. The sun is very strong even in winter, and its quite easy to overdo the sunburn if you are in a sheltered spot. Corralejo Old Town
The initial allocation of the town is based around the old harbour, which was utilized by local fishermen. Here the little sheltered beach, Playa la Clavellina, provides safe bathing for locals and holidaymakers similar. Fishing from the harbour wall is a common pastime, and it is not ordinarily as busy as the photograph suggests. On this peculiar day there was a competitory swim from Lobos back to Corralejo, and humans who had been visiting the tourist selective information office, as well as relatives of those participating crowded onto the wall for a good view.
Corralejo Marina
The further progressed facility consists of a marina for pleasure craft and room for the ferry services to Lanzarote and Lobos, a little island that is a 15 minute ferry ride from Fuerteventura. There are respective trips targeted at those on holiday that run from the harbour, and bookings for these may be made at one of the booths dotted about the area.
Corralejo's Beaches and Dunes
A short distance south of the old port are a few more extensively sandy beaches that have fine opinions of the Island of Lobos. Whereas the little beach by the old harbour in Corralejo seems to making use of the space, these larger beaches are targeted at holidaymakers staying in the north of Fuerteventura, and have everything needed for a day at the beach on Fuerteventura.
The town is surrounded by sand dunes and miles of sandy beaches that form a nature reserve. The beaches amongst Punta de Tivas and the Tres Islas hotels, called Playa del Pozo, Playa del Medano and Playa de Viejo run in to one another and this sandy shore is sometimes called Flag Beach. These beaches are exposed to the wind and this makes these beaches idealistic places to pursue those actions that require a bit more life to the water. Circular stone structures provide a windbreak for those that just want to take advantage of Fuerteventura's sunny climate.
Many of these beaches, although it is genuinely one long beach, are utilized by naturists. The attitude to naturism on Fuerteventura is relaxed and to a degree there are no indicated naturist beaches. Naturists in general prefer to be on beaches that are away from the resort centres, so that they don't offend other bathers. The beach at Playa de Pozo appears being the most common with naturists.
Becoming to Corralejo
Transfer times from Fuerteventura airport to the holiday accommodation in Corralejo is about 4o minutes. You could also travel by bus, guagua, as they are known in Spanish. The journeying is rather pleasant, going through many interesting villages. As you get close to Corralejo to your left you will see the Caderilla de Roja, which is one of the extinct volcanoes that invented these islands, and to the correct many lovely sandy beaches that stretch up majority of the coast to Corralejo.
