This region is rich in historic sites such as the famous Lascaux Caves, the stunning city of Sarlat and the fascinating bastide towns which run along the spectacular Dordogne river. There are many magnificent châteaux to be found throughout this beautiful area of France from Nontron in the north to Monbazillac in the far south. Périgueux, the capital town (29 km S), has regular wonderful markets -Wednesday and Saturday, excellent shopping and magnificent architecture.

Lanquais- the area

The village of Lanquais is included in the book "Most Beautiful Villages in the Dordogne" with good reason. The Chateau has been one of the strongholds of Aquitaine since medieval times, and the village itself is typical of this part of South West France with its narrow streets and warm yellow sandstone buildings.

As a holiday destination, South West France is unrivalled, and Lanquais is typical of the region. It has a superb, reasonably priced restaurant with bar (Les Marronnieres) and its own small shop, with fresh bread and croissants delivered daily. There are countless interesting walks in the area and the Dordogne is known for its wide range of activities.

Lafage, our restored stone farmhouse set on spacious grounds, is at the edge of the village within walking distance of shop, restaurant, the Chateau, and the lake.

The Plan D’Eau de Lanquais is a freshwater lake with beach, swimming and boating (a charge applies).
The Chateau is open to the public and well worth a visit, and the ‘Grange du Chateau’ acts as the location for concerts throughout the summer.

Supermarket shopping can be done in either Lalinde (10 min drive) or Bergerac (20 min away).
But this is the Perigord where food is taken very seriously and the smallest local shop will have all the makings of a gourmet meal. Within a short drive you will always find a town market where local producers gather to sell the best the region has to offer.

The Dordogne area itself is full of places to visit, from medieval Bastide towns and spectacular chateaux to prehistoric sites. Lanquais is located about half way between Sarlat and the main Bordeaux wine areas- so whether you want to wander through the streets and vineyards of St Emilion or visit the prehistoric caves of Lascaux they are all within an hour and a half’s drive.

A superb Championship golf course is within easy reach, and there are other 9 or 18 hole courses nearby. Riding, water-sports, tennis, fishing and canoeing are available at several locations along the Dordogne and the countryside is ideal for walking or cycling.

Although relatively undiscovered, the north east section of the Dordogne has much to offer in terms of activities and interesting places to visit, being close to the pretty river town of Brantôme and the magnificent Renaissance city of Périgueux. There are many impressive châteaux in this area and a day-trip can easily be made to the famed Dordogne river. The grounds of Château Lagut itself are rich in natural truffles and this property has been featured in 'Good Housekeeping', 'Harpers & Queen', 'BBC Good Food' and 'The Times'. Truffles, with their distinctive earthy fragrance, are one of the highly prized delicacies of the Dordogne. The nearby museum at Sorges documents their history and the local auberge is famous for its culinary expertise with this elusive treasure.

Les fetes (festivals)

The French enjoy 11 national jours feriés (holidays) annually. The civic calendar was first instituted in 1582; Bastille Day was incorporated in 1789, Armistice Day in 1918, Labor Day in 1935, and Victory Day in 1945. During the month of May, there is a holiday nearly every week, so be prepared for stores, banks and museums to shut their doors for days at a time. It is a good idea to call museums, restaurants and hotels in advance to make sure they will be open.

Trains and roads near major cities tend to get busy around the national holidays. Not coincidentally, this also happens to be the time when service unions (such as transporters, railroad workers, etc.) like to go on strike — something of a tradition, in fact. Travelers would do well to check ahead, particularly when planning a trip for the last week of June or first week of July!

There are also many regional festivals throughout France which are not included in our calendar. ViaFrance hosts an excellent site which lists fairs and festivals, traditional ceremonies, as well as sporting events, concerts, and trade shows for all regions throughout France.

Under the law, every French citizen is entitled to 5 weeks of vacation. Most of the natives take their summer vacations in July or August, and many major businesses are then closed. All of France takes to the roads, railroads, boats, and airways. Consequently, traveling in France during August is generally not recommended for foreigners.

Public Holidays

1 January New Year's Day (Jour de l'an)
1 May Labor Day (Fête du premier mai)
8 May WWII Victory Day (Fête de la Victoire 1945; Fête du huitième mai)
14 July Bastille Day (Fête nationale)
15 August Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Assomption)
1 November All Saints Day (La Toussaint)
11 November Armistice Day (Jour d'armistice)
25 December Christmas Day (Noël)
26 December 2nd Day of Christmas (in Alsace and Lorraine only)

In years when Ascension Day concurs with Victory Day, we mark only the former, thus ignoring the latter.

Metal workers have the holiday of St. Eloi, July 24 (Festival of St. Eloi - French Basque).

Note that when a holiday happens to fall on a Tuesday or Thursday, many French workers may take the Monday or, respectively, Friday, off as well. This is not official and does not apply to institutions such as banks or government, but is sufficiently commonplace to cause difficulties doing business on occasion
